Simple search

A simple search for a single word will find all entries in the catalogue which contain that word in any form.  The search is not case-sensitive.

For example, a search for "Murray" would find books written by Murray Walker, books published by John Murray, and the title 'Murrayfield: home of Scottish rugby'.

The entire catalogue is searched, except when the search is limited to one of the Author, Title or Keywords entries in the catalogue by ticking the relevant box.

All Author Title Keywords

Search items can be words or phrases.  Separate items with spaces.  Phrases must be enclosed in either single- or double-quotes.  Do not use apostrophes in search items.

A simple search for more than one word or phrase will find all entries which contain any of the words in any form, except when the search is limited to the Author or Title fields, when they will only find entries in that field containing all the items specified.

An Author search for the phrase "Charles Dickens" will not work but "Dickens, Charles" will.  In practice an Author search for Charles Dickens as two words works perfectly well (because it finds only entries with both).

Searches of all catalogue fields with full Boolean logic will be available later on an Advanced Search page.  Click here for further search notes.
